Surgery is over
Ryan had his eye surgery on the right eye this morning and did very well. His favorite doctor at Vanderbilt, Dr. Hays, was our anesthesiologist for this surgery. He was the same doctor who helped make the daily radiation treatments tolerable for Ryan in October/November 2006. He is always really goofy, jokes around with the kids, and wears bright orange Crocks (shoes). Ryan loves him. Dr.Estes, who performed the surgery, is the same doctor who was doing a simple eye exam for Ryan on October 5th, 2006 and saw some problems initially that led him to diagnose what he believed to be a brain tumor that was causing the eye movement problem. Ryan can thank him for possibly saving his life by making an early diagnosis before any of the more serious symptoms began showing up. This eye surgery took about 1 1/2 hours. His eye is very red and is still swollen so it may be a few days or so before we are able to see how his muscles will readjust. Right now it is not pinned inside anymore. It's looking straighter now but currently is pointing a little outward. That may shift a little in the course of a few days when he starts to heal from the surgery. We have an appointment to see Dr.Estes next Thursday for a follow up. It's hard to know exactly what we should be expecting right at this point. Ryan has not complained of much pain. We have been sitting watching movies at home this afternoon. He was already asking to go to Toys-R-Us as we pulled out of the parking lot at the hospital but we told him we'd go there in a couple of days and get him a present for being so good at the surgery. He's a future diplomat or labor lawyer because he tries to negotiate everything.
Addie just called from Nashville to tell us about seeing the Wiggles at Municipal Auditorium this afternoon with both of her grandmas. If that recipe doesn't spell S-P-O-I-L-E-D then nothing does. She relishes having all of that attention to herself and I'm sure has had a great time. They were also going to take her to dinner afterwards. For those of you that know her, Addie is a true princess at heart and loves getting the royal treatment. She also is getting to spend two nights at Rob's parents' house. Ryan is definitely keeping count of the days so that she won't inadvertently get to spend more nights at the grandparents' homes than he's gotten.
